Can You Renovate a Kitchen While Living in the House?
Renovating a kitchen is a significant project that can transform the heart of your home. However, it often raises the question: Can you remodel a kitchen while still living in the house?
At A & D Designer's Group, proper planning and execution make it possible to live comfortably while your kitchen transforms. Here are some tips and considerations to help you navigate a kitchen renovation without moving out.
Look for HDB accredited contractor
Homeowners are required under the Housing & Development (Renovation Control) Rules to Engage an HDB Registered Renovation Contractor to carry out renovation works. Certain work to the unit can only be carried out with prior written approval from HDB. HDB will issue a permit for such works before the HDB Registered Renovation Contractor can commence any work.
Under the Housing & Development (Renovation Control) Rules, it is an offence if house owners fail to engage an HDB Registered Renovation Contractor, obtaining a renovation permit from HDB (if applicable), or comply with renovation rules. On conviction, the house owners can be subject to a court fine of up to $5,000. In addition to paying the court fine, the unauthorised works must be removed and reinstated to their original condition.
Plan Ahead
Planning is the key to minimizing disruptions during a kitchen renovation. Our designers will establish a clear timeline and schedule. This helps you anticipate project phases that might be more intrusive and plan your daily routine accordingly.
Create a Temporary Kitchen
Setting up a temporary kitchen can significantly ease the inconvenience. Use a spare room or a living room corner to set up essential appliances like a microwave, toaster oven, and mini fridge. Ensure you have access to water, either in a nearby bathroom or by setting up a temporary sink.
Consider the Layout and Workflow
Our designers will discuss the renovation phases with you and regularly update you on the progress. Understanding which kitchen parts will be inaccessible at different times is necessary. This way, you can plan your cooking and dining needs around the construction schedule.
Maintain Cleanliness and Safety
Renovation can be messy, and safety is always our top concern, especially if you have children or pets. Sealing off the work area from the rest of the house to contain dust and debris is essential, and we provide safety measures to prevent potential accidents.
Be Flexible
Flexibility is essential when living through a kitchen renovation. There might be unexpected delays or changes in the schedule. A flexible mindset and being prepared to adjust can make the process smoother.
Maximize Off-Peak Hours
Plan major disruptive activities like demolition when the household is less busy, such as weekdays when everyone is at work or school. This reduces the impact on your daily routine.
Communicate Regularly
You will receive updates about progress and potential issues from our designers. This proactive approach helps address concerns promptly and keep the project on track.
